How to check a security licence in Western Australia

Western Australia issues one licence to the agent that advertises or supplies security staff, and others to each person for the work they do. A sole trader needs an agent licence as well as the licence for their own work.

Business licences

Security agent licence

Needed to advertise or supply security officers, bodyguards, consultants or installers. It is issued to individuals, who can hold it on behalf of a partnership or company.

Crowd control agent licence

Crowd controllers must be employed by a licensed crowd control agent, or hold this licence themselves as a sole trader.

Individual licences

Security officer licence

For people paid to watch, guard or protect property, including loss prevention officers. It may not be needed by someone employed by a single employer (not a security agent) to guard that employer’s property without weapons.

Crowd controller licence

For people who control or monitor behaviour, screen entry or remove people at licensed premises, entertainment venues and events.

Security bodyguard licence

For bodyguard work.

Security installer licence

For people paid to install, maintain or repair security equipment, in four classes:

  • Class 1: safes, vaults and locks
  • Class 2: security alarms, CCTV for security purposes, electric fences, bulletproof doors or screens and associated equipment
  • Class 3: security doors
  • Class 4: locks

Security consultant licence

For security consultants, in four classes. Classes 1 to 3 are needed to enter into contracts to supply those items of security equipment:

  • Class 1: safes, vaults and locks
  • Class 2: alarms, CCTV, electric fences, bulletproof doors or screens
  • Class 3: security doors
  • Class 4: watching, guarding and protection of property

CCTV, alarm and lock work

In WA, a CCTV or alarm installer needs a Class 2 security installer licence, and a locksmith a Class 1 or Class 4 installer licence. Check the class on the licence matches the job.

How to check a licence in Western Australia

Use the WA Police Force current security licence holder lists.

  • WA Police publishes lists of current licence holders by licence type, rather than a search box. Each list shows the date it was produced.
  • Find the list for the licence type (for example, security installer), then look for the name and licence number.
  • Someone missing from a recent list may have let their licence lapse, or may be newly licensed. Ask them, or contact WA Police Licensing Services.
